What is IP Geolocation?

IP geolocation is the process of estimating the geographic location of an internet-connected device from its IP address, using network-registration data. It can approximate a country, region, city, and coordinates, along with the network's ASN and registered organization.

Our IP Location Finder looks up real geolocation and network-registry data for any public IP address or domain name — country, region, city, coordinates, timezone, ASN, and network organization, plus a check against the Tor Project's official exit-node list.

How This IP Location Lookup Works

When you enter an IP address, it's checked against network-registration data: a geolocation provider's database for country/region/city/coordinates/timezone, and RIPEstat's registry records for the ASN and registered network organization. Public Tor exit-node lists are checked separately for a real Known Tor Exit flag. No result is ever guessed or filled in — if a data source is unavailable, the tool says so instead of showing a placeholder.

Enter a domain name instead of an IP, and the tool resolves it to its real, currently published A/AAAA DNS records first, then looks up the location of each resolved IP. Read more in What Is IP Geolocation and How Does It Work?

Looking Up an IP Address vs. a Domain

A direct IP address lookup (like 8.8.8.8) returns one result: the location and network data for that exact address.

A domain lookup (like example.com) is different, because a single domain can resolve to more than one public IP — common for sites behind a CDN or load balancer. This tool resolves every current A and AAAA record, deduplicates them, and geolocates up to 5 unique addresses separately rather than picking one and calling it "the" location of the domain.

A: IP location (IP geolocation) is an estimate of the country, region, or city associated with an IP address, based on network-registration and routing data — not GPS or device tracking.

A: Country is generally reliable. Region, city, and coordinates are estimates from the geolocation provider’s database and can be off, especially for mobile networks, VPNs, and IP ranges that have recently changed hands.

Q: Can an IP address reveal your exact location?

A: No. IP geolocation provides city/region-level estimates, not exact addresses, GPS coordinates, or personal identity. Only the ISP, and law enforcement with legal authority, can link an IP to a subscriber.

Q: Can I find the location of any IP address?

A: You can look up the approximate location of any public IP address or domain with this tool. Private, reserved, and loopback addresses (like 192.168.x.x or 127.0.0.1) have no public geolocation and are rejected before any lookup runs.

Q: Why does an IP location show the wrong city?

A: IP geolocation reflects where the network operator’s address block is registered or routed, not your exact position. VPNs, proxies, mobile networks, CGNAT, and dynamic IP reassignment can all shift the apparent location.

Q: Can a domain have multiple IP locations?

A: Yes. Domains behind a CDN or load balancer often resolve to several IP addresses in different locations. This tool resolves and geolocates each public IP separately (up to 5) instead of picking just one.

Q: Does IP geolocation work with IPv6?

A: Yes. IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are both supported for direct lookups and for domains that resolve via AAAA records.
